Era 23 de Diciembre y cruzábamos en una oscura tarde la frontera desde Honduras a Nicaragua. Un nuevo país se abría ante nosotros mientras las fechas de Navidad acechaban.
Llegamos a León, la segunda ciudad mas grande e importante de Nicaragua y nos instalamos en un hostel llamado "El Albergue", con la idea de compartir aquellas fechas con otros viajeros.
La Nochebuena y la Navidad por tanto la pasamos en compañía de nuevos amigos, como Lena, Domingo, Raymond, Jordi, Brian o Desmond con los que disfrutamos de una cena amigable y dicharachera, que se traslado mas tarde a la calle. En León es típico de Nochebuena salir a la calle después de la cena y sentarse frente a la casa y tomar cervezas y licores , mientras ves pasar a la gente que va tirando petardos o simplemente va de puerta en puerta a compartir con los amigos algún momento de la noche.
El día Navidad fue algo distinto, la locura y las ansias de aventuras nos hicieron aparecer para ver el amanecer del 25 en la cercana playa de Las Peñitas. Después todos juntos, nos dedicamos al descanso y a descubrir las peculiaridades de la ciudad en estas fechas o a curar la resaca con algún brindis nuevo.
Aquí en León había algo típico que era "La Gigantona y el enano cabezón" que se paseaban por las calles a ritmo de música celebrando y pidiendo el aguinaldo. Hay una que la llaman la "Dama Española" que mide 3 metros de altura y va vestida con traje y joyas, mientras que el enano cabezón va recitando coplas al son de la música haciendo críticas a los acontecimientos sociales o políticos del país. Es un claro ejemplo de representación de tiempo colonial.
We arrived at our first nicaraguan destiny just about time for Christmas celebrations. On the night of 23rd we checked in at the ¨EL Albergue¨ hostel, and stayed there for a few days, making friends who made the holidays so special to us, having some parties, chilling and learning about the local Christmas traditions.
On Christmas Eve we made an international dinner with people from all around the world, Nicaragua (obviously;)), Ireland, France, Spain, Catalunia, Canada, Austria, Malta, Sweden...
Everybody prepared something to eat and then we just spent hours on feasting. This was followed by our own version of the Purisima tradition. In the beginning of december in Nicaragua the families gather at a statue of Virgin Mary that they set outside their front door, pray and just sit in family circle outside for the whole evening. Similar thing is done on Christmas Eve- people just sit outside their houses. We have omitted the whole religious part and just sat on the stairs in the heath of the evening, drinking, talking and watching fireworks and firecrackers that everyone around was firing.
Our celebrations ended up with a spontaneous trip to the beach in the middle of the nght. We ended up in summer house of one of the nicaraguan guys in the popular beach destination of Leon, Las Peñitas. We watched to full moon set giving place to the beautiful sunrise, and after a nap in the hammocks we enjoyed the almost empty beach.
During Christmas holidays in Leon everybody shows up in the center of the city to take walks with their families, greet on their neighbours and aquaintances and have ice creams in the hot sunshine.
The special tradition of Leon are the dances of "La Gigantona y el enano cabezón" - The giant lady and the big head dwarf. The giant lady: Gigantona or Dama Española, is the personification of the spanish colonizer lady, that appeared very high but also supercilious and overweening to the native people. The native people were usually smaller that the Spaniards- that´s way the enano cabezon (big head dwarf), who symbolizes the native people is so small, but it´s big head says that he is much smarter, than the big lady.
Big statues of Dama Española and Enano Cabezon are set around the city. People also make big dummies are carried around, especially by older children who dance with them often dressed up as the dwarfs aswell, asking for small money in exchange. People gather around them, often joining them in the dance!
In the center of the city there were several concerts organized by the townhall- the big one, made against violence towards women (although the messages sent from the stage by reggae musicians were often awfully surprisinglyu chauvinist!), was a nice occasion for us to continue christmas partying with all the lovely people we met in Leon....

Bezposrednia kontynuacja tego zwyczaju jest zbieranie sie w gronie rodzinnym przed domem rowniez w wigilie. Na ulice lubo chodnik wystawia nsie krzesla i kanapy i siedzi wielkimi grupami, rozmawiajac i popijajac lokalne drinki.
