Tras investigar y comprobar que los Orangutanes de Semenggoh vivían en libertad, nos decidimos a ir a ver si teníamos suerte de verlos. ¡Y vaya que la tuvimos!, en la entrada nos dijeron que las posibilidades de verlos serían casi nulas al ser época de frutas, pues no vendrían al "comedor" donde los rangers del Parque le ponen fruta 2 veces al día.
Pero cual fue nuestra sorpresa, que justo al entrar uno de los rangers nos dijo que había Orangutanes cerca, así que nos fuimos a un sendero y escuchamos ramas de árboles partirse y un de entre la frondosidad de la arboleda asomaron un par de orangutanes, una madre con su hijo.....
¡Wow! fue mi exclamación al observarlos, pero mas aún cuando detrás apareció el macho dominante un ejemplar descomunal que daba miedo mirarlo y que era realmente hermoso( los rangers me dijeron después que se llamaba Ritchi y tenía 33 años).
En esta Reserva Natural se estipula que hay 25 individuos, algunos de los cuales se dejan ver por los comedores algunas veces el año, digamos que serán los individuos rehabilitados y algún que otro vago que pasa de buscar la fruta.
Pero aquí viví algo grandioso, algo que me encogió el corazón por su hermosura, durante unos instantes un Orangután me miró a los ojos, intercambiamos nuestras miradas y me vi reflejado en su mirada, ese instante me provoco tanto nerviosismo como felicidad, fue una experiencia única, de algún modo había entablado comunicación con aquella Orangután......
Después de verlos en la selva, esos mismos individuos se acercaron al comedor para unos minutos después desaparecer en su hogar, entre el chasquido de ramas y el contoneo de los árboles, pero dejaron en nosotros el hermoso recuerdo de haberlos visto.
Semenggoh is a Wildlife Centre for Orangutan rehabilitation. It was established in 1975. In the beginning the orangutans were kept in cages. Now they are free to go wherever they want in the deep forrest. There are two feeding times, but even a these times of a day it cannot be guarateed, wheter they pass by or not- especially now, in the fruit season, when they have enough food in the forrest.
I was not sure if it's a good idea to go there. I've read too much about how places like this work and how the animals get abused to make a good image for the tourists... and how centres like these get their finances from big companies who at the same time are responsible for the extermination of orangutans. In the end I got convinced to go...
We were really were lucky. The orangutans came even before the feeding time. We had a very close encounter with the alfa male: the 33 years old Ritchie, whom we had to run away from, because he came that close! Seeing these beautiful animals was both amazing and heartbreaking. It left me with the thought that we are the most cruel and stupid species on this planet for beeing responsible of the near extinction of these wonderful creatures....
Semenggoh to centrum rehabilitacji dzikich orangutanów. Centrum otwarte zostało w 1975 roku. Na początku działalności zwierzęta osierocone i uratowane z niewoli, trzymane były w klatkach. Od dłuższego czasu żyją one jednak na wolności, w gęstym lesie otaczającym Semenggoh. Zobaczyć je można podczas karmienia, choć i to nie jest gwarantowane. Ponieważ orangutany są na wolności, to one decydują, czy mają ochotę wpaść na zorganizowaną dla nich owocową ucztę. Często się nie pojawiają... szczególnie teraz- w sezonie kiedy w dżungli pełno jest dzikich owoców.
My mieliśmy szczęście. Orangutany pojawiły się jeszcze przed karmieniem. Wśród nich był rzadko widywany samiec, szef stada, 33- letni Ritchie, przed którym musieliśmy w pewnym momencie uciekać, tak blisko podszedł....
Wizyta w Semenggoh pełna była emocji. Z jednej strony oczarowały nas te wielkie, rude zwierzaki, z drugiej zasmucił nas los, jaki im zgotowaliśmy. Centra jak to stają się powoli jedynymi miejscami, gdzie jeszcze zobaczyć można orangutany... niedługo być może zabraknie dla nich miejsca na wolności....
