CSG. CENTRO ESPACIAL GUAYANÉS. PUERTO ESPACIAL DE KOUROU.

Llegamos a Guayana Francesa en junio de 2017 y nos instalamos a vivir en Kourou. Y es precisamente en esta población donde se encuentra el Centro Espacial Guayanés, el conocido como Puerto Espacial de Kourou y desde el que opera la Agencia Espacial Europea.
Nunca antes me había imaginado llegando a un Centro Espacial, y de repente, vivíamos a 5 kilómetros de uno. Algo bastante peculiar a mi modo de ver.
El Centro Espacial Guayanés tiene la peculiaridad de estar situado a 500km del ecuador , una posición inmejorable para un Cosmódromo. Ademas la seguridad de la selva amazónica y un territorio casi deshabitado proporcionan a este Centro una ubicación privilegiada para los lanzamientos.
Cualquiera puede visitar el Centro Espacial con una cita previa y gratuitamente. El recorrido te lleva a ver todas las instalaciones durante horas.
Las zonas de lanzamiento son seguramente junto con la sala de operaciones Júpiter los lugares que mas me asombraron. Pudimos visitar las zonas de lanzamiento de los cohetes Vega, la zona de lanzamiento de los cohetes Soyuz y la zona de lanzamiento de los cohetes Ariane5, todas ellas espectaculares. Ademas de poder ver las zonas de ensamble final situadas a varios kilómetros de las plataformas de lanzamiento.
Si bien la visita al Centro Espacial nos agradó, nada como ver despegar los cohetes. Por el momento hemos visto durante este año de vida en Guayana Francesa, y especialmente aquí en Kourou ¡una decena de cohetes!
Siempre recordaré el primer lanzamiento de mi vida, sobre la playa de Kourou, en mitad de la noche. Un Ariane5 despegó y se hizo literalmente de día, la velocidad del cohete y la trayectoria me dejaron estupefacto y el ruido y onda expansiva que vinieron segundos mas tarde me acabo de dejar anonadado. Fue una experiencia mágica, única, inesperada.
También recordaré con especial cariño, el segundo despegue de nuestras vidas un mes mas tarde. Esta vez tuvimos la suerte de verlo desde la mismísima sala de control Júpiter, invitados gracias a Sylvie, la madre de nuestro amigo Axel, quien trabaja en el CSG.
La experiencia desde la torre de control Júpiter fue como transportarme a una película, asistiendo con curiosidad a todo aquello que sucedía en los monitores, contando cada segundo de la cuenta regresiva para el despegue y asistiendo en directo al brutal despegue a escasos kilómetros. Fue fastuoso el espectáculo. 
Después vendrían los discursos de ministros y clientes de los satélites puestos en órbita y como no, de un festín lleno de brindis por la alegría de una nueva puesta en órbita por parte del Arian5 de dos satélite comerciales.
Pero debo admitir, que cada vez que veo un despegue siento al niño que habita en mi interior sonreír, asombrarse y alucinar con todo lo que acontece, el ruido bestial, la traza de la trayectoria, la velocidad extratosférica y el misterio de adonde llegará.
Las primeras veces siempre son especiales, hasta el terrible momento en que naturalizamos lo que un día llegó a fascinarnos mas allá de las estrellas.

Kourou is known for one thing:the space center. Here, 5km from the town the Guiana Space Centre has its headquarters. You can visit the centre (its free, but you need to register beforehand), you can also try to get a place at one of the view points during the launch (we tried both) or just watch the rocket from any point around the city (you could even see and hear it from the farm, 40km away).

 The European Space Agency (ESA), the French space agency CNES (National Centre for Space Studies), and the commercial companies Arianespace and Azercosmos conduct launches from Kourou. The russian Soyuz site is on the other side of the terrain belonging to the Space centre, with the entrance form Sinnamary. 
The whole terrain is huge-the 70.000 hectares turned into a protective zone for the nature. The access to the grounds is restricted or partially restricted, which means that the fauna and flora is left almost undistrbed (except the launchas and the direct launch zone that is a toxic hazard just after the launches). The zone is home to different species of animals (including the rare jaguar and giant anteater) and covers all the different types of ecosystems found in Guiana. Three different types of rockets are launched from the base; the russian made Soyuz, Vega with italian origins and the biggest of them all Ariane 5, that will soon be replaced by Ariane 6.
The base is operational since 1968. Kourou was chosen for the placement of the space centre mainl out of the two reasons: proximity to equator (500km, it means that less energy is needed to put the rocket in the orbit), and low population of the area together with open sea to the east.

Since we live here, we have seen several launches (there is one every 1-2 months), of all the types of spacecraft. Most of them are commercial flights that place sattelites on the orbit. The most spectacular are the ones of Ariane 5 (the biggest of them), especially in the evening, when the darkness makes the light effect more dramatic. You can also follow each launch directly from your computer (and here in Guiana also on cable tv).
We have both seen several launches just by going outside... from the beach (the best ones) or from the backyard, and even from the farm. We also had opportunity to watch the whole operation as insider, being invited to the operation centre at Jupiter/CSG, (the invitations are available for free before each launch). Each of those launches starts with official talks, then the technical part follows (you can watch the launch from the balcony and then follow it on the screens inside), and it ends with a small free banquet with champagne (if the launch was successfull). We have also made the official visit offered by CSG, where you are taken on a long bus ride around the whole site and learn more about the centre.

Centrę Spatial Guyanais (CSG= Gujańskie Centrum Kosmiczne) to ogólnoeuropejskie przedsięwzięcie, datujące swe początki na 1968 rok, które regularnie wysyła na orbitę ziemską różnego rodzaju rakiety. Są to przede wszystkim loty komercyjne (wysyłane są różnorakie satelity) ale misje nierzadko połączone są też z badaniami naukowymi.

Teren należący do centrum jest ogromny, rozciąga się od granic miasta Kourou aż po Sinnamary i obejmuje ok 70.000 hektarów. W okolicach Sinnamary swą siedzibę ma część należąca do rosyjskiego projektu Soyuz. W okolicach Kourou mieszczą się punkty startowe malenkeij włoskiej Vegi oraz Ariane 5 (największej z rakiet). Kończone są też właśnie pracę nad najnowszym projektem- Ariane 6.

Teren CSG jest częściowo lub całkowicie zamknięty dla publiki (w zależności od miejsca oraz bliskości startu rakiety), co sprzyja ochronie okolicznej fauny i flory (nie licząc kilkukilometrowej strefy skażonej po każdym starcie). Niechcący stworzono małą rezerwę przyrody, gdzie bez zakłóceń (oproch startów rakiety) żyją nawet najrzadsze gatunki roślin i zwierząt (w tym jaguary oraz mrówkojady olbrzymie). Ten ogromny kawał ziemi obejmuje również różne ekosystemy, dając pełną reprezentację gujańskiej biosfery.

Centrum CSG można odwiedzić (za darmo po uprzedniej internetowej rejestracji, płatne jest tylko muzeum kosmosu). Pełna wizyta trwa kilka godzin i obejmuje wycieczkę autokarem do wszystkich stref startowych (jeśli są akurat otwarte przed/ po starcie rakiety), oraz oprowadzanie po centrum dowodzenia.

Można też spróbować dostać się do centrum dowodzenia, lub jednego z punktów widokowych na sam start rakiety- ograniczona liczba darmowych zaproszeń jest dostępna na stronie CSG. My oczywiście skorzystaliśmy również z tej okazji! Cała impreza trwa kilka godzin, zaczyna się od oficjalnych przemówień, następnie wysłuchać można technicznych detali, obejrzeć start z balkonu widokowego a następnie prześledzić trasę rakiety w stronę orbity na ekranach centrum dowodzenia. Jeśli start był udany, wizyta kończy się wielkim darmowym bankietem z szampanem :)

Przez rok pobytu w Gujanie byliśmy świadkami wielu startów (odbywają się średnio co miesiąc-dwa). Widzieliśmy Soyuza, Vege oraz kilka Ariane. Rakiety widoczne są nawet z odległych zakątków Gujany. Widać je pięknie zarówno z dżungli jak i z farmy. Naszą ulubioną miejscówka jest plaża w Kourou, szczególnie jeśli lot planowany jest wieczorem, wtedy właśnie efekt jest najciekawszy!Naszą pierwszą Ariane widzieliśmy właśnie na plaży. Czarne niebo nagle się rozświetla, a po kilku minutach od pojawienia się rakiety na nieboskłonie, można ja usłyszeć i poczuć jak drgają szyby w oknach oraz włosy stają dęba z wrażenia!
