Petit Saut, es el embalse hidroeléctrico de Guayana Francesa. Construido entre los años 1989 y 1994, produce dos tercios de la electricidad de este territorio.
Si bien cuando uno llega allí tanto la obra , como el embalse le parecen a uno fastuosos, cabe comprender que esta lugar y sobre el río Sinnamary, hay inundados 310 km cuadrados de selva amazónica. Por tanto hubo y hoy sigue existiendo cierto impacto ambiental por distintos motivos.
Y fue hasta aquí, que nuestro amigo Axel nos llevo a descubrir este lugar enigmático. Un lugar en el que emprendimos rumbo sobre la piragua hacia algún lugar desconocido de la selva, para pernoctar y vivir la aventura de convivir con la naturaleza.
El lago de Petit Saut y ese bosque emergente de troncos muertos te regala doble sensaciones, una imaginarte tiempos pasados, otra, el presente. Un presente donde navegar entre aquel bosque inundado regala panoramas abrumadores, donde serpentear para evitar obstáculos es obligatorio y por donde navegar durante horas te envuelve en un lugar mágico.
Pero nuestra aventura sería salirnos de aquel lago, para introducirnos en una crique lejana a varias horas de navegación, para remontarla entre obstáculos y establecer nuestro campamento.
Allí ene aquel campamento, las risas, las charlas y las salidas en busca de fauna flora reinaron durante dos días. Lo mas impactante fue ver una anaconda de unos 5 metros, y los mas abrumador cerrar el ojo y abrirlo en aquellas hamacas ancladas en mitad de aquella selva, una selva donde el silencio no existe y donde los colores, las luces, los torrentes de agua y los amigos nos regalaron días y experiencias inolvidables.
Siempre estaremos agradecidos a Axel y Tobias por esta expedición de 3 días y a la naturaleza por cada vuelo, por cada sonido, por cada movimiento....
Petit Saut es mitad vida, mitad muerte. Y es a esa mitad de vida a la que debemos agarrarnos con fuerza, para comprender y empaparnos del lugar como se merece.

Petit Saut is a damm on Sinnamary river, that produces about two thirds of Guianas electricity. It was buit between ´89 and ´94 and still has a big impact on the local biosphere.
The artficial lake of Petit Saut cobers over 300 square kilometers of what before was amazon forest. The inundation of the Sinnamary valley resulted in creation of hundreds of small islands that cut off the wildlife from the land. The whole lake is now a big tree cementary, with thousands of dry limbs and branches that silently remind us of what this place was before- a vast jungle.... But its not only a tree cementry, also the waters of the lake turned to almost a desert- there is a whole layer of vegetation on the bottom, that uses all the oxygen during the putrification, which further results in underwater dead zones. All of that, combined with illegal goldmining (with the use of quicksilver that filtrates into the water) is a sad prize the nature had to pay...
But I must admit that the place, despite the sad story behind, is beautiful. The dead forest in the lake has an enchanting charm to it. The lake is a giant labirynth of islands, rivers and secret passages between the fallen trees.
We have spent three days lost on the shores of the lake. Axel, who knows Petit Saut very well took us and our friend Tobias on a small adventure in the jungle.
We slept in the hammocks, protected from the rain with plastic tarpaulin. We had to make our camp completely from zero and then spent our time on discovering what the jungle has to offer. We found a small cascade and..... a dead anaconda of 5 meters!

Do dzisiaj odczuwalny jest wpływ tej inwestycji na środowisko naturalne. Podczas zalania terenu powstały setki maleńkich wysp, odcinając od siebie populacje zwierząt lądowych i niemozliwiajac mieszanie. Jezioro jest dziś olbrzymim cmentarzyskiem dla tysięcy tropikalnych drzew, z których niektóre należały do rzadkich gatunków oraz imponowały wiekiem a co za tym idzie też rozmiarem. Również dno jeziora przekształciło się w cmentarz. poszycie dżungli pokryte jest zawsze grubą warstwą wilgotnego listowia, które pod wodą ginje (wraz z zatopionymi kawałkami drewna), co skutkuje wytworzeniem się podwodnej pustyni bez tlenu, gdzie nie jest w stanie przetrwać prawie nic, Dodatkowo, podobnie jak cała gujańska dżungla, strefa leśna wokół jeziora jest miejscem nielegalnych operacji poszukiwania złota, co wiąże się z zanieczyszczeniem rtęcią.
Mimo że za powstaniem jeziora Petit Saut kryje się tak wiele smutnych faktów, miejsce to jest piękne i fascynujące. Las martwych konarów wystających z wody oraz labirynt wysp, mają niewątpliwy czar.... a dżungla wokół nadal jest prawdziwa dżunglą! Na jej trzydniową eksplorację zabrał na nasz przyjaciel Axel, który Petit Saut zna jak własną kieszeń.
Zbudowaliśmy więc od zera nasze leśne obozowisko, gdzie spaliśmy w hamakach przykrytych brezentem. Nasze wyprawy wgłąb dżungli zakończyły się sukcesem (podobnie jak całą wyprawa), odkryliśmy piękny mały wodospad....oraz znaleźliśmy martwą (w tym przypadku to chyba przemawiało na naszą korzyść) anakondę, która wg naszych obliczeń dokonanych za pomocą patyka, mierzyła ponad 5 metrów!
