CHOLULA.

Although now overshadowed by the bigger Puebla, Cholula was once a mjor religious and mercantile and pilgrimage center. When Cortes arrived to the city, he was stunned by its beauty and size and the uncountable amount of temples. Although most of them are long gone, the pyramid of Cholula is still a stunner. In its final shape, after beeing overbuilt six times, it was 120m long at each side of the base and 16m high. The base of the pyramid is four times the size of Giza Pyramid in Egypt!
Unfortunately, beeing an important pilgrimage center for the locals, it´s fate in hispanic hands was more than certain. A church has been built over the temple, and a thick layer of soil hid it from peoples eyes for many centuries. Now, partially excavated it only gives us an idea of the lost greatness of Cholula.
The church on the top of the pyramid became with time a pilgrimage site for the Catholics, who come here to see the image of the Virgin of the Remedies.
The church yard has the incredible views over the city and the volcanoe La Malinche.
Cholula is the city of churches. While a legend says there are 365 of them, all built over pre hispanic temples, the fact is that tgere are way less, but all of them seem to be painted yellow:)
The city is beautifull but our visit was made fukky valid only after visiting the market, which we adored! We had the probably best gorditas ever, made of blue maiz, with huitlacoche mushrooms (that grow on the maiz!) and freshly picked pumpkin flowers!

Cholula, mimo statusu miasta uniwersyteckiego, obecnie pozostaje w cieniu Puebli, natomiast w czasach hiszpanskiej konkwisty byla waznym osrodkiem politycznym, handlowym oraz oielgrzymkowym. Najwieksza z miejskich swiatyn przyciagala z daleka zwolennikow Quetzalcoatla. Widac jej niewielki, odkopany kawalek.
