MONTPELLIER.........Y DESPUES PLAYA!

Woow what a busy weekend. Finally it feels like summer and finally we went to the beach!!!!
We started already friday-late at night we arrived in Montpellier, parked the van under the Saint Clément Aqueduct and went for a short night walk- and then continued the sightseeing very early next morning. Montpellier is a typical Mediterranean town. You can feel the spirit if south everywhere here- in the architecture, in the way of being of the people and in the traffic chaos off course!
I don’t think you will be surprised to read that the city is medieval :) From this time there are some ruins of the city walls left, you can still see two ancient  city wall towers, although not as ancient as the rest of the walls. Worth to see is the beautiful botanical garden- one of the oldest in Europe (from 1593), Triumphal arch: Porte du Peyrou and the Cathedral Saint Pierre. The Place de la Comedie is the main square of the town , close to it there is the Fabre Museum and a fully modern Antigone District, designed like an ancient greek town.
I personally liked the most all the small streets near to the Medicine University, behind the Cathedral. There you can find the hip bars, art galleries; the coolest second hand shops (had a real shopping fever!!! But luckily for my wallet everything was closing for lunch…) and all the craziest, alternative people with colorful cloths and smiles on their faces.
Montpellier is very close to the beach- we’ve been told that you can get to the seaside using public transport (which is rather unusual in France), but off course we took our van :)  The way to the beach is not very well indicated (you have to follow the indications to the airport, NOT plage, which made us pretty confused ! ) and finding a parking place is a miracle, but finally everything went well and we’ve spent a lovely afternoon bathing in the Mediterranean sea, drinking gazpacho, and sleeping siesta on the white sand…
The plan was actually to spend the night in Montpellier (in the center there is a kind of a summer festival/fiesta…) but in the end we decided to see something more. First stop was Meze, a lovely small seafood and fish harbor where- if you’re lucky you can see- the Boat Jousting games, where two people fight like medieval knights… but instead of horses they use boats- and the looser ends up in the water.
