NIEUW NICKERIE, PRIMERA PARADA EN SURINAM.

Tras 3 semanas en Guyana, en donde debí esperar a que la embajada de Surinam decidiera si me concedía o no el visado de entrada en su territorio por considerar que me quedaba poco espacio en mi pasaporte. El final, fue justo, y me lo concedieron, para que así pudiéramos seguir con nuestro periplo por esta parte del Mundo.
En cualquier caso, desde Guyana debimos abordar un ferry que nos llevara a Surinam. Este ferry que tardo apenas una hora nos dejo en un nuevo destino, un nuevo país del que aprender y descubrir..
El mismo capitán del ferry se ofreció a llevarnos a la primera ciudad con relevancia a varios kilómetros del puerto, Niuew Nickerie, Decidimos quedarnos una noche y poder así contemplar las bondades que pudiera ofrecernos esta ciudad, la segunda en importancia de Suriname.
Las casas de arquitectura holandesa, los canales, el mercado y el mestizaje de este país nos daban una idea de lo que podríamos encontrar en Surinam.
Si ya la arquitectura, los letreros en holandés y los canales nos desubicaban un poco, el mestizaje entre distintas comunidades que conviven en este territorio nos aportó alegría.
Aquí conviven criollos africanos descendientes de la esclavitud, holandeses arribados en periodo colonial, indígenas nativos(amerindios), indostanes e indonesios de Java arribados como mano de obra en épocas de la colonia.Todas estas comunidades forman un amalgama espectacular, con sus gastronomías, religiones y costumbres.
Niuew Nickerie, situada a orillas del río con el mismo nombre y frente a las costas del océano Atlántico fue nuestra puerta de entrada para disfrutar de este nuevo territorio.

I´ve got the feeling that there is a competition between Guyana and Suriname on who is nicer.... in each country people told us that in the other we won´t be as welcomed as in their homeland. 
I must call it a tie. It was the greatest pleasure to travel in both of them. Everywhere we went people were incredibly sweet and helpful and friendly. 
Already at the boat that we took to cross the border we got a ride opportunity to the closest town.... because the local guys didn´t want us ¨to pay anything, because it´s expensive and we might get ripped off¨  They even patiently waited for us, while we got our passports stamped (we were the last ones in the queue) and took us to the cheapest hotel in town and got us a nice prize there! I mean how crazy is that?!I am still in awe...
We stayed in Nickerie for one night. The town is rather sleepy and calm, but we loved it that way. The city market was really nice and all in all... we had the best first impressions of the country from our stay here. We loved Suriname from the first moment ;)

Mam wrażenie że zarówno Gujańczycy jak i Surinamczycy walczą o odznakę najprzyjaźniejszych mieszkańców ziemi, twierdząc przy tym że ich sąsiedzi w tym wyścigu wypadają gorzej. Naszym zdaniem jest remis- i to na niebotycznie wysokim poziomie!
Od pierwszej sekundy i od pierwszego uśmiechu zakochaliśmy się w Surinamie i jego mieszkańcach. Już podczas przeprawy promowej, jeszcze przed przekroczeniem granicy spotkała nas pierwsza miła niespodzianka. Chłopaki, którzy sterowali promem zaproponowali nam że nas podwiozą do Nickerie, czyli pierwszego większego miasta w nowym dla nas kraju. Zasugerowali to przecież zawsze lepiej jak za darmo się podrozoje, a przecież autobus drogi i w dodatku naciągają turystów. Nawet poczekali aż skończymy odprawę paszportową, mimo że byliśmy ostatni w kolejce! A później podwieźli nas pod same drzwi hotelu i wynegocjowali dobrą cenę! To się nazywa powitanie!
Samo Nickerie to małe, senne miasteczko. Jest tu trochę starszych, kolonialnych budynków, kanał przecinający centrum wypełniały kwitnące kwaty lotosu a targowisko miejskie było takie jak lubimy: gwarne, pełne ludzi i lokalnych produktów.
